On Mother's Day:  A Loving Gift of Sanskrit Mantras for the Kids

 By a Staff Reporter

On this Mother’s Day, a Houston, Texas mother has produced a CD of Sanskrit mantras to help her children connect with their cultural heritage.

“Mantras for My Children…and Yours,” comprising a set of 10 Sanskrit mantras, is a hip-hop inspired CD with funky sitar and tabla grooves that introduces some of the most basic Sanskrit mantras to second and third-generation Indian Americans.

“When my grandmother passed away in India last year, I felt an immediate disconnection with my heritage,” says Ninakumari Patel or “Mantra Mom,” a Gujarati stay-at-home mother. “I realized at that moment that my children will never benefit from their great-grandmother’s spiritual heritage, Patel , the mother of two boys, Jaidan, 4 ½ and Kalel, 3, adds.

Furthermomre, 10% of the CD profits go toward Vibha, a non-profit organization helping to build schools and provide healthcare for children in India. “After hearing too many horror stories of the living conditions of low-income families in India, I felt a need to do something meaningful,” she says. “When I learned bout Vibha and their countless volunteers, I knew that this was an organization that I could trust.”

The mantras, sung by Chandrakantha Courtney with chanting by Patel, include “Hare Rama Hare Krishna,” “Gurur Brahmaa Gurur Visnuh,” “the Gayatri Mantra”, “Om Namah Shivaya” with the last mantra including positive English affirmations. The CD comes with a six- panel brochure with translations and a special message for parents.
